When to start feeding baby food?

Close-up of a mother giving food to her cute baby

It seems a lot of things come in quick succession when you have a new baby. Just when you’ve mastered one thing there’s another challenge looming. One thing we’re asked about a lot here at Bellamy’s is how do you know when to start feeding the first “solid” baby food?

Well, you have to remember that all babies are different and, importantly, it’s not a problem if you’re not right on top of it. They won’t starve!

But there are a few simple signs. The easiest is age. Most children are ready to start their first solid baby food, usually baby rice cereal, at around 4 months. It’s not usually earlier, but it could be up to a month or two later. The next sign is that you’ll find the usual milk feeding routine doesn’t seem to satisfy them. They may be irritable or cry more than usual – you would too if you were hungry!

Here are some more signs your baby may be ready to start solid baby food:

    • Your baby will probably be able to sit upright when supported, with good control of the head and neck;
    • May be unsettled after a bottle or breast feed – milk alone may not be sustaining your baby through the day or night;
    • May wake at night when he/ she previously slept through;
    • Wanting to put things in his/ her mouth – this can also be a sign of teething;
    • Your baby may show interest in food eaten by others, watching you and your mouth while you are eating;
    • Your baby may take small amounts of pureed food off a spoon easily and eagerly when you try the first time.

Baby‘s first baby food

If you think your little one is just about there, make up some baby rice cereal. Our certified organic baby rice is made of soft rice flakes and is made up with their usual milk to a smooth, runny consistency (follow the instructions on the pack!). Try a little at the start of feeding time and see how it goes. If it’s rejected no problem, just try again in a few days. If it’s accepted, then you’re on your way.

Of course, rice cereal and the simple foods that follow don’t make up the bulk of food intake for quite some months. Remember that milk will still be providing your child with the bulk of her nutrition.

There is a natural progression from rice to baby porridge and then onto pureed foods suitable for 4+ months. These are all designed to have an increasing solid size in the baby food so that baby gets used to texture and they also start to expand the flavour repertoire.

By six months teething should be starting and your little one should be well into solids by then.

There’s plenty of information on the Bellamy’s website about this and don’t forget, if you have any questions, you can always call an experienced Bellamy’s mum for advice.

Important Notice to Parents and Guardians

  • The World Health Organisation recommends that breastfeeding is best for your baby.
  • Having a balanced diet when breastfeeding is also important. Infant Formulas should only be used after you’ve sought advice from a doctor or health practitioner.
  • A decision not to breastfeed can be difficult to reverse and introducing partial bottle feeding may reduce the supply of breast milk. It is also wise to consider the cost of infant formula.
  • If you use infant formula, all preparation and feeding instructions must be followed as per the manufacturer’s instructions. This is important for your baby’s health.
