What is in baby formula?

bellamy's logo

One of the highlights of being a kid was to blow bubbles through the straw into the milkshake when you were treated to a trip to a café (the sound of my sisters and I gurgling into the glass consistently provoked grimaces from my poor mum).

But as a parent of a small baby, seeing bubbles at the top of your freshly mixed formula bottle can cause a bit of panic. Why does formula froth? What happens if my baby swallows froth? Will it cause wind? Do some formula’s have more froth than others?

Ok so the first thing to say here is that breastmilk is not frothy. This is comforting given that it may be a bit frightening if at a sudden let down you were frothing. And it’s also important for us to let you know that we are big fans of breastfeeding as the best way to feed your baby But sometimes it’s not possible or you just don’t want to, so you need to choose a high quality formula.

We often get asked what’s in formula and we have some mothers asking why Bellamy’s organic baby formula tends to froth when it’s mixed up, since not all formulas do.

The Bellamy’s team decided to get together and test the top 6 from birth milk formula’s just to try to work out what it all means…

Baby Formula Comparison

We mixed up all six formulas using newborn baby formula (Step 1) according to their instructions using boiled water at the correct temperature. Then we shook them in identical babies’ bottles to mix and we compared the froth that each produced by measuring the height of it.

What we found was interesting. Five brands, produced some froth, but Bellamy’s produced the most. One leading brand produced none at all. So we seem to have established that its pretty common to have froth…but what causes it and why does Bellamy’s have more?

We looked at the ingredients to see what might be happening and that gave us an idea because Bellamy’s Step 1 infant formula was, according to the ingredients lists, the only one to contain full cream milk powder. Perhaps not surprising when you consider we only use organic milk.

The idea? What happens when you take ordinary, adult milk and shake it up in a baby’s bottle? Good question.

We bought a readily available, organic, full cream milk (arguably the best you can get) and we did the test cold and warm to see what would happen.

Newborn Baby Formula

Guess what, real organic milk froths quite a bit, too. We also tested some non-organic fresh Tassie milks and found that they frothed a fair bit too. So, maybe the closer you get to real milk, the frothier it is?

The Bellamy’s team is going to keep looking at this one and see what else we can find out. But in the meantime, its great to know that frothing is normal for milk, and we’re happy Bellamy’s formula does as it should, not only from a pure and wholesome nutritional view but also because it acts like what it is: real.

Baby Wind?

The most important thing for mums is, does the froth cause baby to get wind? The answer is a very clear NO! When you think about it, when you turn the bottle upside down to feed, the formula liquid completely displaces the froth to the other end of the bottle. The teat fills completely with milk. As a result there is no froth or air for the baby to gulp if the bottle is held correctly. Sometimes it can be hard to see when your baby has actually finished the bottle so make sure you are watching carefully toward the end of the bottle because babies should never suck on an empty one.

Can I get rid of the froth?

So back to the café. Ever watched a barista finish frothing milk and tap the jug on the bench? Well that’s to get rid of the extra bubbles that would ruin the perfect pouring of the milk into your latte. You might like to try it on your baby’s formula if you are more of a flat white formula lover…
