Far from some stereotypes as the latest trendy label for food, organic farming actually precedes today’s conventional farming methods. But what are the differences between organic and conventional farming?
Primarily, organic farming refers to traditional farming processes which were used before pesticides and other chemicals became the norm.
Organic farmers also steer clear of using genetically modified (GM) seeds. Genetic modification can assist in producing desirable characteristics such as a longer shelf life or a greater immunity to pests. Yet this manipulation of a seed’s natural genetic makeup can be detrimental to the environment. GM crops may also have a negative impact on biodiversity.
In addition, Sustainable Table highlights that there are rules around the saving of GM seeds: farmers must purchase new seed every year, which does not promote sustainable farming. Organic farmers may use the previous year’s seed to grow new crops.
In conventional farming, soil is fortified through the use of chemical intervention. Organic farming relies on various natural methods to nurture and protect crops, including animal grazing, hand weeding and crop rotation.

If you are able, breastfeeding is best, as it provides the ideal nutrition for babies and has other important health benefits too. Health Professionals are well placed to provide appropriate feeding advice and support. A healthy diet during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding is important.
Introducing infant formula either partially or exclusively, may reduce the supply of breast milk. Once reduced, it is difficult to re-establish. Social and financial implications, such as preparation requirements and cost of formula until 12 months, should be considered. When using infant formula, always follow the instructions for use carefully, unnecessary or improper use may make your baby unwell.
