Introducing solid foods
|
Your baby’s first foods should be single ingredient, easy to digest and mild tasting. Free of harmful chemicals or additives. Gluten free rice cereal, mixed with baby’s usual milk to a thin consistency that can be easily sucked off the spoon is a traditional first baby food choice. Pureed fruit such as apples, pears, or well-mashed ripe bananas are also a good choice. Offer a teaspoon of the one food after a milk feed for a couple of days and then start to increase the portion. After a couple of days introduce a second serve of solids later in the day after a milk feed. Alternate between suitable cereals, pureed fruits and well cooked and mashed vegetables such as pumpkin, potato and carrots. Keep mixing the serves with baby’s usual milk to a smooth consistency, making it thicker and lumpier as your baby’s chewing skills develop. You can either prepare your own food or purchase commercially prepared food such as Bellamy’s Organic Babyrice.
