When should I introduce solid foods?
Frequently Asked Questions - Introducing solid foods
  • World Health Organisation recommends breast milk as the best food for babies for the first six months of life.
  • The decision to begin introducing solid foods to your baby before the age of 6 months should be made in consultation with your baby health professional.
  • Introduction of solids is not recommended for babies under the age of 4 months because the digestive system is not mature enough.
  • From 6 months, breast or infant milks alone will not meet all your baby’s nutritional needs.
  • Look for the signs to determine when your baby is ready and then discuss with your baby health professional. Signs might include appearing still hungry after a milk feed, becoming more wakeful at night or watching with interest as you eat.
